....by societies standards!
But we can no further talk about sexuality without categorizing induviduals into male or female. Without a specific gender how can we eat the next layer of cake?
The apprehension of being abnormal is held up by the oppression of our own identities. Elizabeth Grosz argues in each of us there are elements and impulses that strive for conformity and elements which seek instability and change... those who reap its benefits heterosexual men, primarily (Grosz 1995).
It seems heterosexual men triumph again. Keeping these 'ideal' binaries of the male is head of the household the main bread winner he procreates with his wife who pops out a bunch of children and they all live happily ever after.
What keeps these binaries at bay? Wilchins explains discourse as a set of rules for producing knowledge that determines what kinds of intelligible statements can be circulated within a given economy of thought. For example, in the discourse on gender, you can only say meaningful things about two kinds of bodies that will make sense (Wilchins 2004).
Oh if only it were that simple.
Although if men can depict themselves as masculine they will surely be heterosexual and if women portray themselves as feminine they will surely be heterosexual too!
The discourse merely trains us to be; not what we will be. What is socially acceptable what is frowned upon.
Sexuality has an astounding amount of possibilities heterosexual lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and other sexualities. Who dictates what is the norm for sexuality? Foucalt suggests it's been handed down to those in the western world from the Victorian era now over 100 years ago. Where the only legitimate couples were those who could procreate. The era where you didn't talk about sex but you were studied by sexual behaviours.
The discourse stems from power. And who in this day and age has ALL of the power and has for a long time?
He's a dude I like to call Santa.. Oops I meant Jesus Christ!
(To be fair I don't actually have an issue with people that do take their religion seriously, it's just not for me.)
The power is dated. I say out with the old in with the new. Equal rights and opportunities should be a basic human right.
